MY three favorite movies..

3. SPADIKAM(Malayalam)

Spadikam (transl. Crystal) is a 1995 Indian Malayalam-language action drama film written and directed by Bhadran and starring Mohanlal.

Plot Summary

Thomas Chacko, or “Aadu Thoma” as he is widely known, is a local goon and a quarry owner, who is notorious for being the undefeated champion in his confrontations. He is the son of retired school headmaster Chacko (Chacko master), the President‘s medal winner in mathematics.

In the flashback, unlike his father, Thomas was not good at math, but was a child prodigy in mechanical and electronic gadgetry. He made an AM radio receiver inside a soap case, at a time when phonographs were the fad of the time. Thomas’s talent astonished others, whereas his father saw them as a waste of time. He always compared his son to the best student in the class – Balu, adding to his pressure. His father asked his language teacher Ravunni master to grade his paper so as to fail him, on the belief that only low grades will provoke him to study harder. When Thomas found this, he became outraged and ran away from the village, after stabbing Balu on the palm with a compass. Fourteen years later, he returned as a changed man, no longer a prodigy. His father still hate him and profess to love his sister more, who lived up to the expectations…

My thoughts

What i thought is it’s also a movie which tells the importance of listening also rather than talking. Thomas Chacko had great talent but his father never appreciated it…

Some students maybe not that good in studying but they might have some other hidden talents.

Plot Summary

Initially Roja does not like what Rishi did, but when she learns of Shenbagam’s love story and consequent rejection of Rishi, she apologises and starts seeing him in a new light. Meanwhile, due to the illness of his Chief, Rishi is assigned to an army communications centre in Baramulla to intercept military intelligence. Roja’s world turns upside down when Rishi is abducted by terrorists whose agenda is to separate Kashmir from India and free their leader, Wasim Khan, from judicial custody.

Faced with the daunting task of rescuing her husband, Roja runs from pillar to post, pleading with politicians and the military for help. Further complicating matters is the communication gap: She can’t speak their language, and they can’t speak hers. Meanwhile, Rishi, held captive by a group of terrorists led by Liaqat, an associate to Wasim Khan, tries to reason with the terrorists, about their misdirected motive for the liberation of Kashmir. Liaqat’s sister shows a little compassion towards him…

My thoughts

Awesome story for sure. But what impressed me the most is the extent to which that simple village girl was willing to go to get her husband back….

1.Cinema Paradiso

Cinema Paradiso (ItalianNuovo Cinema Paradiso,  “New Paradise Cinema”) is a 1988 Italian drama film written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. The plot of Cinema Paradiso is loosely based on the story of the Protti family, who have owned a movie theatre in MantuaItaly, since 1904.[3] The film stars Jacques PerrinPhilippe NoiretLeopoldo TriesteMarco LeonardiAgnese Nano and Salvatore Cascio.

Plot Summary

In 1988 Rome, famous film director Salvatore Di Vita returns home late one evening, where his girlfriend sleepily tells him that his mother called to say someone named Alfredo has died. Salvatore obviously shies from committed relationships and has not been to his home village of Giancaldo, Sicily in thirty years. As his girlfriend asks him who Alfredo is, Salvatore flashes back to his childhood.

A few years after World War II, eight-year-old Salvatore is the mischievous, intelligent son of a war widow. Nicknamed Toto, he discovers a love for films and spends every free moment at the movie house Cinema Paradiso. Although they initially start off on tense terms, he develops a friendship with the middle-aged projectionist, Alfredo, who often lets him watch movies from the projection booth. During the shows, the audience can be heard booing when there are missing sections, causing the films to suddenly jump, bypassing a critical romantic kiss or embrace. The local priest had ordered these sections censored, and the deleted scenes are piled on the projection room floor.

Alfredo eventually teaches Salvatore how to operate the film projector. Cinema Paradiso catches fire as Alfredo is projecting The Firemen of Viggiù after hours, on the wall of a nearby house. Salvatore saves Alfredo’s life, but not before a reel of nitrate film explodes in Alfredo’s face, leaving him permanently blind. The movie house is rebuilt by a town citizen, Ciccio, who invests his football lottery winnings. Salvatore, still a child, is hired as the new projectionist, as he is the only person who knows how to run the machines…

My thoughts

Everything about this movie is just beautiful. His love towards the girl, his love towards alfredo and his love towards cinema in which i think by the end we realizes it was his love for the movies that comes on top…
